New Forest Ocknell Review

Welcome to my New Forest Ocknell review for this camping and caravan site

New Forest Ocknell Information Centre Tent

As soon as you drive into this lovely New Forest campsite you know you are in for a treat.

ARCHIVE INFO: In 2013 the site was managed by Irene and Dave and their team, who also look after the nearby Longbeech camping ground, which is a woodland setting. Literally hours of hard work went into making the Ocknell Information Centre, including getting the tent to stay up during the foul April weather, earlier in the year!

The Ocknell Information Centre is a fascinating place to explore and absorb all the wildlife and history facts that Irene and Dave have put together for you. Hopefully this facility will be back in future years too.

New Forest Ocknell Campsite view

As you can see the campsite is set in open grassland on the old Stoney Cross WW2 airfield. This means there are plenty of hard standing opportunities if you arrive with your caravan.

Here's an example of Irene and Daves dedication to this site. They took photos of the animals around the campsite and then Dave made them into handmade puzzles for children to play with.

There is a lovely display of Fact Books

  • Insects of the Forest - find out about a swamp spider!
  • Mushrooms will show you what a Stinkhorn looks like
  • Birds has beautiful pictures of Goldcrests and other birds which visit the area.
  • Butterflies and Moths Purple Hairstreak are about too
  • What, when, where Log what you have seen to share with others.

As you can see there was lots of information when you stay here, in this beautiful New Forest campsite - and lots of it you could actually participate in! Great value for your pitch price?

New Forest Ocknell Deer Info

Anyway, lets explore all their hard work.
Apart from the wonderful antler display as you enter the tent, deer hides hang from the ceiling which really adds to the atmosphere of the tent.

All around the walls are beautifully displayed and put together boards telling you about the deer, butterflies and other animals and wildlife you are likely (or lucky enough!) to encounter during your stay.

The last campsite Irene and Dave managed was so great the Countryfile team visited in 2011 and filmed a programme which went out in early May to record the stunning dawn chorus.

Here are just some of the information displays you could see:

  • True Stories discover who "Brusher" Mills was
  • New Forest pony and the Verderers facts and photos
  • New Forest Keepers who are they and how do they deal with forest fires etc
  • WW2 History -there was a wartime camp here which was linked to WW2 Stoney Cross Airfield

Both Ocknell and Longbeech are beautiful New Forest campsites and my review was a joy to do.

It is a green site - once you arrive in your car there is no need for you to use it again during your stay - a bike can be delivered to your tent or caravan and off you go.

I hope you really enjoy your stay at New Forest Ocknell or Longbeech camping grounds and that you pick up lots of fascinating information from the wonderful staff and Information Centre.

If you would like to search anywhere else on this site you can use the search tool below.

Simply type in "new forest" followed by whatever you would like to find and press enter. i.e if you wanted to look at Sandy Balls just enter new forest sandy balls.
