Wartime memories of an evacuee

by Helen
(Exeter, Devon. UK)

My aunt was sent to stay with a New Forest family during World War Two.
She found the experience terrifying at first as she had only ever seen dogs and cats and never ponies or cows up close. She was sent from just outside Southampton and found it really hard to adjust.
By the time she was sent home she said she was really sorry to leave the New Forest and all the animals.
Years later she married a farmer to make sure she had her animals around her at all times!
